Stephen is an experienced commercial lawyer and the principal of Suttons Solicitors.
He specialises in commercial litigation, international arbitration, public international
law, sports law and employment law.
Stephen has been actively engaged in commercial law and dispute resolution for
more than 20 years. His practise encompasses business and commercial disputes,
employment litigation, construction litigation, professional negligence litigation
and international arbitrations. Stephen has been the recipient of numerous academic
honours and over his career he has participated in various high profile trials
and international arbitrations both in this country and overseas
He has worked in the UK, The Far East, Africa, Europe, and the United States of
America in relation to major international disputes and has represented foreign
governments, multinational corporations and private clients. He has acted in respect
of numerous disputes before the High Court of England and Wales, The Court of
Arbitration for Sport, ICSID and the ICC. Stephen frequently advises clients on the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility.
In addition to his litigation practise in this jurisdiction Stephen has acted
for various high profile business people and sports personalities. Stephen appeared
as Counsel for the Appellant in Adrian Mutu v. Chelsea FC (Court of Arbitration
for Sports 2008/A1644). Stephen was counsel for ABB in its dispute with the Government
of Mongolia (mediation hosted by the Asian Development Bank). He has worked on
disputes in Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria, Turks & Caicos, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar,
Poland and South Africa. Stephen has worked extensively with the World Bank Group
in Washington DC in respect of international mediations and arbitrations including,
in particular, resolving disputes with the Government of Ethiopia in conjunction
with the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency in Washington DC.
Stephen has a first class degree in law from the University of Cambridge and is
a Senior Scholar of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Stephen was a visiting Lecturer
at the London School of Economics and a visiting Professor of Law at Pepperdine
University in California. He is a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and
